8 Key Natural Ayurvedic Herbs for Dry Cough

Dry cough, also known as nonproductive cough, is when no phlegm is produced while coughing and it feels like you have a tickle in your throat.   • Pneumonia

Dry cough is a common symptom of pneumonia caused due to the inflammation of respiratory tracts. It can be accompanied by chest pain, fever, fatigue, diarrhea and shortness of breath.

  • Interstitial Lung Disease

There are about 200 forms of chronic lung diseases, all of them causing shortness of breath and dry cough. These conditions damage the alveoli (air sacs) by making them stiff and reducing their expansion capacity.

Consuming turmeric by adding it to milk or honey can help to fight against dry cough. Turmeric gargle and inhaling smoke of a dried root are also effective remedies for cold and cough.    

  • Ginger

  • Marshmallow Root

The herb has high content of mucilage (a thick substance that coats the throat) which can ease irritation caused by cough and sore throat.

  • Peppermint

Peppermint has antiviral and anti-inflammatory properties, due to which it helps in unclogging sinuses caused by infections, common flu and allergy. In Ayurveda, peppermint is recommended because it helps in normalizing the flow of Prana Vayu and reduces the escalation of Ama (toxin)in the body.

  • Licorice Root

In Ayurveda, licorice root is excellent for treating sore throat, cough and bronchitis due to its Ropan (healing) and expectorant properties. It helps in loosening mucus and coughing it out.

  • Garlic

Garlic is known to be Kapha balancing, antimicrobial and expectorant properties due to which it helps in fighting cough. In Ayurveda, it helps to boost immunity and helps in reducing Kapha from the respiratory tract due to its Ushna(hot) nature.
